He served as senior editor at Look Magazine from 1953 to 1970, where he earned an unprecedented number of awards for education reporting, and is currently a contributing editor for Esquire. He holds a third-degree black belt in the martial art of aikido, and is co-owner of an aikido school in Mill Valley, California.
