"Green Is The New Blue!"
by Michael Allen Howard

There's a tidal wave of opportunities that have been and will continue to be created by socially responsible business owners throughout the United States.  Check out www.greenjobs.com and www.sustainablebusiness.com for a variety of job opportunities.  If you're in PR or Marketing or perhaps you're a creative, socially responsible media person, try contacting companies that you know that are in the process of going green or have recently undergone a green facelift. These are newsworthy in some cases but it's always a PR opportunity even internally.  You can create an opportunity for yourself by interviewing a CEO, Sustainability Officer, Green Consultant or anyone else that is passionate about making a difference for our planet. Socially responsible advertisements will continue to be a growing trend.  Another idea is to film green events and festivals.

I recently shot footage at the Harmony Festival (founded by ATMA member Debra Giusti and one of the best festivals in the US in my opinion) in Santa Rosa, CA and there were  opportunities to interview a variety of people including environmental leaders, celebrities, authors, rock stars, green vendors and natural products manufacturers.  The Greening of Corporate America seems like an interesting idea for a documentary.  The main point that I'm trying to make here is to BE CREATIVE and find ways to generate income using your skills without having to rely on someone else offering you a job.  Last but not least, expand your network (both in person and on the internet) and collaborate with other like minded professionals on projects.  Web sites such as www.linkedin.com and www.facebook.com are popular social networking sites and there are plenty of socially conscious and creative people there for you to connect with.

Thank you and have a great day!

To get optimum publicity, become a media resource. Essentially, the media is interested only in what you can do for them or their audience. So frame your presentations to show the media how your story can satisfy their goals.

Follow the careers of your media contacts. Learn which subjects interest them, the projects they’re working on and those they plan to cover. Make their job easier by feeding them information on those areas and give them names of people who might help. Alert the media about items that may interest them, even those in which you have no stake.

Be available when media contacts call, consider it an opportunity and go the extra mile. If you can't supply what they want, think who else you know that might. Give the media names and leads, make some calls, check with your network and do research... whatever might help.

Always be professional. When the media doesn’t respond, understand that it’s not personal and don’t be upset. They were probably too busy to return your calls. Stay on their radar screens by periodically calling or e-mailing to gently remind them that you’re still around and available if they need your expertise.
